Account Takeover: Connect Login Risk to Account Actions

A successful login does not close the risk question.

What to understand

Account takeover occurs when someone gains control of another person's account. Credential abuse can be one route, but the consequential activity may happen after authentication: changing contact details, accessing stored value, adding a destination or making a purchase. Useful detection connects the login with what follows.

Build the account-change sequence

Review failed and successful access attempts alongside recovery events, device changes and edits to sensitive account details. Compare the sequence with prior use. A legitimate customer replacing a device can look unfamiliar, so choose proportionate verification based on the combined evidence.

Signals to review together

A compromised account can retain its familiar history while someone else changes how it is used.

  • Access Changes: New device or unfamiliar location
  • Profile Edits: Contact or recovery detail changes
  • Sensitive Actions: New payments or destinations
  • Event Sequence: What changed before the action?

Carry context to the next decision

A payment or withdrawal review should be able to see relevant preceding account changes. Record which evidence was available when each action occurred and where escalation could have helped. Test whether additional signals improve intervention without unnecessarily locking out account owners.

Keep legitimate activity in view

Travel and a new phone can explain access changes. Review the sequence before escalating.
