Behavioral Fraud Signals: Timing, Sequences and Outcomes

Understand the pattern before acting on the spike.

What to understand

Behavioral signals describe how activity develops: the pace of submissions, the order of actions, repetition across accounts and changes from a useful baseline. Their value comes from connecting a pattern to a business outcome. Unusual activity by itself does not explain intent.

Choose a relevant baseline

Compare like-for-like journeys. A product launch, seasonal campaign or returning customer may change timing and volume without introducing abuse. Segment the activity enough to understand those differences and document when the baseline no longer reflects current conditions.

Signals to review together

Request pace, repeated actions, and changes from prior behavior can help a team identify where more context is needed.

  • Baseline: Understand ordinary activity
  • Velocity: Review unusual changes in pace
  • Sequence: Compare the order of actions
  • Outcome: Check whether the pattern matters

Validate combinations and sequences

A repeated identifier, fast submission or sudden account change can become more meaningful in combination. Review the full sequence and track confirmed outcomes, uncertain cases and legitimate exceptions. Ask whether the pattern provides earlier or clearer evidence than the team already has.

Keep legitimate activity in view

A promotion or product change can alter legitimate behavior. Update the context as the business changes.
